How to Determine Your Locale/Code Using NCES

  • How to Determine Your Locale Using NCES
  • Go to the National Center for Educational Statistics Website,
www.nces.ed.gov.  There is a tab at the top of the page entitled "Data Tools" – click on the tab.
  • On the next page, select "Visit Search for Public School Districts."
  • Select "California" from the drop down menu and enter the "County" the school is located in.  Click on the "Search" button on the right hand side of the screen.
  • This will lead to a list of School Districts for that particular County.  Click on the "School District" the School is located in.
  • In the "District Information" box; under "District Name", click on the "schools for this district" link.
  • This will give you a list of all schools in that particular District.  Click on the "school name" being searched.
  • This will lead to the individual school data, which includes a section entitled "School Characteristics."  Within this section there is the "Locale/Code."
  • This code determines whether a school site is Urban, Suburban or Rural.
  • Effective 10/1/2007, previous single digit codes will not be used for the Career Technical Education Facilities Program.  Please use the following two digits code system.

If the code is 11, 12 or 13, the school is Urban.
If the code is 21, 22, 23, 31, 32 or 33, the school is Suburban.
If the code is 41, 42 or 43, the school is Rural.
